Top Ten Architects Upgrade Gingerbread House for Charity

November 18, 2008

Creative Room in collaboration with a very cool lifestyle store, Vancouver Special are pleased to announce the first annual Gingerbread Competition and Charity Auction!Hidden behind a thin veneer of jujubes and smarties, the ubiquitous form of the gingerbread house has stood unchallenged for too long! The malignant plague of cookie-cutter housing, which fouls suburbia cannot be invited into our homes this holiday season. No longer representati...

Louise Francis-Smith

Full Frontals Rear Views

Louise Francis-Smith has been a resident of Strathcona for a very long time.

Moving to Strathcona almost thirty years ago, Louise would take her beloved dog, Sheba, for a walk everyday. It was during these walks that she discovered her new neighbourhood and home, then quiet and peaceful, and yet, not without its problems, all of which she found rich in colour and character. It was on these slow walks, discovering Strathcona, that she was inspired to bring her camera along to capture the uniqueness in Strathcona's colourful character that she witnessed.

"I loved walking down the lanes and began to record what I saw: Narrow lots, the small empty plots of winter that grew into colourful and spectacular gardens in summer, with beans climbing the tall beanpoles. It was magical."

"Strathcona neighbourhood had a rural feel to it back in 1980, and the row of houses on Hawks Avenue, you could imagine a horse tied to the railing. There was a rooster that would wake us each morning at the corner of Hawks and Georgia."

1600 Block of Commercial Drive - 1939/2008

June 28, 2008

1600 Block of Commercial Drive - 1939/2008

Most of the buildings in the picture remain, with the exception of the building on the corner of the 1600 Block , which used to be the Canadian Bank of Commerce Building (1912). It was demolished in the '40s. The turret on the building across the street was removed but is in excellent shape otherwise. Also note another small Safeway store was located on the Drive. As well, notice the street car lines in the foreground that were removed in the 1950's.

Saving Artist Studio Space: 901 Main St.

Valerie Arntzen has been working diligently at raising awareness of the Arts Community in East Vancouver for more than a decade. With recent real estate boons, developers purchasing old properties in eastvan have become threats to existing Artist Studios in old buildings that hold more revenue potential when leveled, and condos put in their place.

City of Vancouver Abandons Artists!

A city evolves, never remaining the same, as the old is brought down and the new is built up. This is true in business, in social-norms, in science, transportation, and land development. One significant evolving event, The Eastside Culture Crawl, is one event that has evolved and grown significantly over the years, Starting with only a handful of locations and artists, it has grown by leaps and bounds as Artists eagerly occupied run-down places that offfered the space and environment for their craft. As the city has evolved, the Culture Crawl has too, and so has the East Vancouver communities. With the Woodwards redevelopment project, and the public outcries, social housing has been adjusted into the plans. As further evolution affects the city-scape, it would be hoped that the City of Vancouver introduces measures that retain the treasures created by the dedication and locality of so many artists in East Vancouver.
